The nineteenth century gave viewers a plethora of fictional genius. Perhaps the most recognized literary movement was Transcendentalism. This literary concept was based on a group of new ideas in religion, lifestyle, and viewpoint. Walden was an account of Thoreau’s period spent moving into a shelter in Walden Pond around Concord, Massachusetts; he explores such ideals as personal reliance, plus the simplicity of nature. The Transcendental movement inspired writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Alan Poe and sparked one more literary motion known as Dark Romanism. As opposed to Transcendentalism the Dark Romantics believed that human nature can be not necessarily good, that the darker side of humanity had been being disregarded by the transcendentalists. The works of the Darker romantics is stuffed with tales of revenge, infatuation, shame and madness. The conflicts among good and evil established a gloomy, dark mood with the tales authored by the Dark Romantics. Nathaniel Hawthorne published the Scarlet Letter, a story of pity and hypocrisy, his ancestor’s Puritan beliefs and his not enough belief within their ways lead to the creation of this part.
His main character, Hester, is tagged an adulterer and is forced to wear a scarlet “A that represents her bad thing of marriage act. While people who see her see a sign of pity and sense of guilt, Hester views it as being a symbol of strength and pride, and above all, a symbol of the town’s hypocrisy. This romantic bit of literature also has gothic elements. Hawthorne’s usage of imagery and dismal colors lend it to the genre of Dark Romanticism. Additional works by Hawthorne, specifically, My personal Kinsman, Main Molineux, are filled with darker and light images, from the key character, Robin’s, meeting in the ferryman to his recognition that his kinsman can be not the respectable gentleman he once believed he was, this story had dark undertones that go along way in offerring the peculiar and secretive ways of the townsfolk that Robin meets.
