Re-adaptation of Malay House Heat Comfort Style Elements in Modern Building Elements – Case Study of Selangor Traditional Malay House & Low Energy Building in Malaysia Nur Hidayahtuljamilah Ramli
Postgraduate Studies, Faculty of Architecture, Planning & Surveying, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), 40450 Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia Abstract: The conventional Malay home is one of the richest components of Malay’s cultural traditions in Malaysia.
Generally, the traditional Malay home is a reflection of the Malay community’s way of living. With greater global awareness of the planet and a renewed perspective on modern Malaysian buildings, architects and designers happen to be once again trying to find tropical solutions in building design. One of the primary characteristics of traditional Malay house is they are designed with a deep understanding and esteem for characteristics, but this designwith-nature strategy is no longer seen in the modern complexes.
The purpose is consequently to study the thermal comfort and ease design components such as building orientation, in house layout space, natural ventilation and lamps, window styles, and bunch effect on the top design.
The investigation was carried out through observations, interviews and some analysis visits. An extensive research was accomplished within the adaptation of Malay residence architecture components with picked the Selangor traditional Malay house because the key examine and one particular modern building which is the Ministry of one’s, Green Technology & Water (MEGTW) building, Putrajaya. This study tries to have documented information for those who are interested and for the future generation because the traditional Malay residence was advanced by the Malays over years, adapting to their needs, tradition and environment. This analyze is crucial to bring back the consciousness in the understanding and appreciation of the strategy of thermal comfort style elements of traditional Malay property adapted into modern building design. Key phrases: Design components; Green building; Thermal convenience; Traditional Malay house.
LAUNCH
The purpose of this study is usually to investigate the readaptation of Malay residence on energy comfort design and style elements in Selangor classic Malay property into low energy properties in Malaysia which is the MEGTW building in Putrajaya. The components such as building orientation, in house layout space, natural air flow and lamps, window models, and bunch effect on the roof design will probably be discussed in this paper. This procedure of discovering the heat comfort style elements is important to understand how the vernacular structure was integrated deep understanding of Malaysian equatorial climate and how Malaysian designers and can be nowadays re-adapted the heat comfort design and style elements in to new modern building to be able to maintain the heat comfort in the building occupants. Traditional Malay House: The regular Malay home is one of the wealthiest components of Malaysia’s cultural history. A house was designed and created by the users themselves – the Malays in Malaysia – Corresponding Author:
in respect to their individual needs and with a good comprehension of nature and environment, adding and reflecting their lifestyle and lifestyle [1, 2]. Furthermore, the design plus the construction process in terms of energy efficiency, the indoor environmental qualities, eco friendly site planning, the components and methods used have invariably been essential aspects related to classic Malay system practice. The Malay property is a perfect vernacular architecture before that is ecologically sustainable [2]. Traditional Malay properties have thermal comfort components such as the usage of local elements, the house alignment, high frequency roof-as collection effect function also because solar covering devices, raise on stilts-to capture high-velocity of surroundings movement, and many of home windows and openings-to allow even more natural lamps and natural ventilation. The successful types of the traditional Malay house pertaining to the environmental aspects have made a single wonder that Malay people in the past appeared to understand bioclimatic design even more compared to the new building development [3].
Low Energy Building: On Oct 18, june 2006 the Prime Minister of Malaysia has stated on the technique to counter olive oil prices spiraling with some work to be taken on to inspire more properties to use the lower Therefore , the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (MEGTW) building was designed and built by the government with technical type on Strength Efficiency coming from DANIDA (Danish International Development Assistance) starting in March 2002 and was completed in September 2004. This building is a Nationwide Demonstration job and it’s aimed to promoting strength efficiency (EE) in properties, and the project is part of a wider program geared towards developing the capacity of the Malaysian building market in EE building design [6]. After the structure was accomplished, the MEGTW has demonstrated integration of the most effective energy performance measures towards achieving the overall best cost-effective building. Malaysian Climate: Malaysia is situated inside the equatorial region, the climate characteristics will be uniform heat, high moisture and copious rainfall. Gusts of wind are generally mild.
Proximity to the sea and an equatorial location make a nice and humid climate, which can be constant all year round [4]. The Malaysian climate can be classified as warmhumid equatorial, characterized by high temperatures and humidity. Air temperatures averages among 22 and 32 degree Celsius with small total annual and diurnal ranges [1]. Today, the Malaysian Meteorological Division (MMD) underneath the Ministry of Science, Technology and Advancement (MOSTI) has claimed the average atmosphere temperature for most cities in Malaysia has increased. In 2 decades, the average air flow temperature has increased from the the least 22 degree to 24 degree and the maximum of air temperature got reached 34 degree Grad [5]. This consequence shows that Malaysian climate has been changing beginning with 1990 till 2010.
Consequently , architects and designers from this country will need to learn from ancestors and re-adapt the heat comfort style elements by traditional Malay house since an important component that should be considered in building modern building in Malaysia. METHOD Site Observation: Internet site observation provides the primary info for the analysis since it is first hand information gained through this analysis. This research first seen the Selangor traditional Malay house to study about the thermal convenience design element of the house. As an example the house alignment, how the Malays arrange the inside layout space, how they style the fenestration to gain even more natural venting and lamps, the glass windows design, and stack influence on the roof style.
