The novel is around Stanley Yelnats, Stanley is known as a boy who also grew up with misfortune due to a curse put on his great-great-grandfather. Due to his bad luck, he was sent to Camp Green Lake, a teen detention camp, for a crime he would not commit. Stanley and the friends at the camp are forced to dig large holes inside the dirt every single day in the scalding sun. As Stanley continues to the burrow holes and meet each of the other boys in the camp, the narrator intertwines three diverse stories to reveal why Stanley’s family includes a curse and what the Warden is looking for. Among the stories was when Stanley was a son his great-great-grandfather, Elya Yelnats, received a pig coming from Madame Zeroni, who was a gypsy, in exchange for a promise. Elya’s guarantee was that following the pig grew strong he would carry Madame Zeroni, who have only got one lower-leg, up a mountain and sing her a track that she had taught him. After he gets caught up in love this individual takes a vessel to American and never meets his promise to Madame Zeroni.
