In Faulkner’s “A Rose to get Emily”, the narrator explains to the story of Emily Grierson, a woman whom lived a really long life and was proven to everyone throughout the town. The storyline also tells the reader of Emily’s mental deterioration in the future was not well-known or identified by the townspeople. Mental disease, especially in the South, was disguised by eccentricities and a tolerant frame of mind toward people who were socially consider high class (Phelan 188).
The first element of this short story details Ms. Emily Grierson as a popular woman in the city, mostly because she had been around pertaining to so long. “When Miss Emily Grierson perished our whole town traveled to her funeral service: the men experienced a sort of sincere affection to get a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which usually no one had seen preserve an old man-servant-had seen in the last ten years” (Faulkner 299). In the history, she was tax exempt by Colonel Sartoris following the death of her dad in the year 1894. There was zero written record of this however , and the newer generation of elected officials tried to send out her a notification that her taxation were credited. The first sign we come across of her mental health issues comes if the city regulators arrive to gather her income taxes, and she repeatedly states that they need to find Colonel Sartoris, who at that time had been useless for nearly a decade. For Emily, the verse of time does not seem to subject at all while she has spent many years of her life stored inside the machine in her home.
Part two takes place about two years after Emily’s father died, and simply a short time following she was abandoned by her can be husband. Now in the tale we see further deterioration of Emily’s state of mind as she’s rarely found outside of her home. “After her father’s death the lady went out very little, after her sweetheart disappeared, people barely saw her at all” (Faulkner 301). As time passes a terrible smell begins to be released from Emily’s house. Lots of the citizens lamented about it. Eventually Judge Stevens says he refuses to animadvert on a lady of smelling bad, so 4 men snuck onto Emily’s property at nighttime and sprinkled lime at home to prevent the foul scent. The reader afterwards finds out that Emily experienced pretended almost everything was usual, as if her father hadn’t died for 3 days ahead of she finally allowed the entire body could be disposed of. The reader after that realizes that if the smell wasn’t originating from her dad where could it be coming from? No-one in the community thought the lady was having serious mental health issues, They thought it was her father got driven away a lot of men from her and appeared to be overprotective. “We remembered all the men her father experienced driven away, and knew that with nothing at all left, she would cling to what had swindled her, while people will” (Faulkner 302).
During part three of the tale, Emily was sick for a long time and makes a reappearance with short hair making her look tragic and serene (Faulkner 302). The location had hired contractors to correct the sidewalks. Homer Barron, the foreman of the labor operation, shortly became a popular man about town, as he seemed to provide laughter to everyone. Soon after coming into city, he was noticed riding about with Miss Emily within a buggy. Everybody in the community seemed happy that the girl had identified someone to produce her happy at last. Most of the older people in the town recalled that no-one had come to her father’s funeral and felt remorseful for Emily, about what got happened and how she got reacted to her father’s death. This further shows that mental illness was not something mentioned in the open during this time period. At the end of the part of the story the reader finds Emily in the drug retail store for verweis poison.
In part several, the people from the town began to suspect that Emily is going to make suicide mainly because Homer Barron, was homosexual and was often viewed drinking with younger men at the Elks club in town. The ladies with the town eventually forced a Baptist minister to demand Emily. The residents with the town had been sure there will be a wedding at this point, as Emily had purchased men’s toiletries and items from the jewelry salesman. After this, Miss Emily seems to develop serious agoraphobia, the fear of going out of one’s residence, and is just seen in glass windows, having grown obese and gray. The only person who came and went from the home was the servant. She continuing to receive duty notices that remained unclaimed. At this point, Emily has entirely lost her mind, “She was only occasionally seen in the downstairs home window looking through people” (Faulkner 305).
The final area of the story will take the reader to the opening of Emily’s home after more than ten years of only the stalwart being inside. After the stalwart opened the home, he was never seen or heard from once again. He only ran away indicating that he felt pity for what he previously been covering for all the years he had performed for Emily. He can also have left for fear of being blamed intended for the killing of Homer Barron, mainly because as previously stated mental illness in the early 1900’s was incredibly taboo, particularly for a woman. The room above the stairs in Emily’s home, was obviously a very strange place intended for the townsfolk as is hadn’t been opened in above forty years. The area was equipped as a wedding suite, and inside the toiletries of Homer Barron put near a folded suit and sneakers. The townspeople then located Homer Barron’s body resting in the understructure rotted to the point where he didn’t want to be taken out of the bed, “The guy himself put in the bed” (Faulkner 306). Next to him, around the recently laid upon pillow was a great iron grey hair. This can be a final demonstrating of Miss Emily’s condition, she seems to have suffered from delusions and agoraphobia, as your woman spent four sleeping up coming to a person that your woman had murdered.
