b) Protagonist: Mr. WhiteAntagonist: Sergeant Major Morris

The protagonist in The Monkey’s Paw is Mr. White because he is the character making all of the wishes throughout the story.

The antagonist is the Sergeant Major because he gives Mr. White the monkey’s paw, which creates all of the problems in the story.

2. The story begins on a cold, wet night at Mr. and Mrs. White’s home. Mrs. White is knitting by the bright fire while Mr. White and his son Herbert play chess. They are waiting for Sergeant Major to arrive.

3. The inciting incident occurs when Sergeant Major leaves the monkey’s paw with Mr. White because the rising action begins after Mr. White makes his first wish.

4. i) Herbert asks Mr. White to wish for 200 pounds

ii) Herbert gets killed at work ->Mr. White colored gets 2 hundred pounds iii) Mrs. Light forces Mr. White to wish for Herbert to come to life

5. The climax from the story happens when Mrs. White colored is battling to open the door for Herbert while Mister. White is rushing to obtain the monkeys foot to make

his third and last wish for Herbert to go away. The door lures open when he makes the last desire and the streets is empty. We know this can be a climax in the story because all of Mr. White’s 3 wishes are gone and nothing even more can happen with the monkey’s foot.

6. The conflict among Mr. and Mrs. White colored ends once Mrs. White colored opens the door and sees a clear street after Mr. White colored made his last desire. Mrs. White is disappointed that her son is not generally there but Mister. White rushes to her area to comfort her. The conflict between Mr. White-colored and the unidentified creature that Herbert could be, ends when Mr. White-colored makes his last wish for Herbert to go back to his severe. 7. See question #11

8. The Monkey’s Paw is informed in first person narration. The narrator can be not a figure in the account, he simply tells the story.

9. a) After Mr. White makes his first wish for 100 pounds and it doesn’t appear immediately, Herbert says “Well, I no longer see the cash, and I gamble I never shall”. This is a form of paradox because as it turns out, the result of that want is Herbert’s death so Herbert hardly ever sees the amount of money – the same as he explained. b) The very next day before Herbert goes to work, he constitutes a comment declaring “Well, don’t break into the money before We come back”. This brief review is also sarcastic because Herbert never comes back. c) One more form of paradox, which is wider than the latter examples, is that The White’s think about the monkey’s paw as a solution to most of there complications. The irony on this is that absolutely nothing could be further from the truth. The monkey’s paw end up triggering them only misery.

twelve. Throughout the story, the character types of Mr. and Mrs. White move through many improvements. The initially example is in the beginning of the storyplot; they are a happy couple that “seems to have all they will want”. At the end of the history, they are fighting with each other and perhaps they are both stressed with tremendous grief from the loss of their boy. Individually, Mr. White seems to be more slow-witted than Mrs. White in the beginning. The initial example of this is how Mr. Light does inadequately at mentally stimulating games and seems to lose the game to Herbert. One other example is definitely when the gentleman from Herbert’s work comes bearing the bad news about Herbert’s death, Mr. White-colored is gradual to understand this is of his visit, but Mrs. White colored catches in right away.

These types of personality traits will be later reversed when Mrs. White does not realize that the Monkey’s foot brings difficulties with every desire. After Mrs. White forces Mr. Light to choose to Herbert to come alive again, Mr. White-colored becomes the quick-witted one when he proves evil is on the other side with the door, realizing the paw has penalized him once again for being money grubbing.

11. Uncertainty has been developed in The Monkey’s Paw inside the scene where Mrs. White colored realizes the paw will grant Mr. White two more wants. Suspense is first created when ever Mrs. Light asks Mister. White to wish for Herbert to come alive again. As readers, we realize something bad is going to happen if the want is made and are also not sure in the event Mr. White colored is going to abide by Mrs. White’s orders. The level of suspense builds after Mr. White wishes for Herbert to come alive again as well as the knocking around the door starts. The puzzle reaches the climax as Mrs. White is fumbling around planning to open the doorway to let Herbert in, whilst Mr. White-colored tries to locate the Monkey’s paw for making his third and last wish for Herbert to return to his grave. Mr. White locates the paw and makes his wish as well the door lures open, exposing an empty road.

12. The sergeant main describes the paw while magic – that it scholarships three guys three desires, but with outcomes. He explains to the Whites regarding the first man to wish and how he applied his third wish for death. This foreshadows that the paw causes an abundance of grief. He then throws the paw in the fire and tells Mr. White to “let it burn”, warning him to not touch it. Mr. White disregards the sergeant will not exactly what he told him not to do. The sergeant as well tells Mister. White that an old fakir put a spell upon it to show that people who affect fate do this to their sorrow. This is one more example of just how foreshadowing is utilized to show the reader that the foot will cause mischief later in the story. However the sergeant explains to Mr. Light all of this, Mister. White chooses to ignore the warnings and continues to help to make his first wish.

13.

14. Yes, the sgt major really does deserve some of the blame. Even though he put the monkey’s paw into the fire and warned Mister. White often not to wish, when Mister. White asked him using it to generate a wish, the sergeant informed him. As well, the sgt wasn’t extremely specific if he was referring to the ‘danger’ of the paw. He really should have explained his own experiences and what consequences this individual faced if he made his three desires.
