In Arthur Miller’s 1945 novel Emphasis, there are many nefasta attitudes that manifest themselves throughout the action, Miller clearly takes a stance that all of these anti-Semitic landscapes are reasonless. The environment of the book is in mid-1940’s Brooklyn. The key character, Lawrence Newman, functions in an business office and runs the assistants in the office essentially. He is acknowledged by his boss, and everything appears to be going well to get Newman until he will buy a pair of glasses that seem stereotypically Legislation. Once Newman starts using these spectacles, his whole world is usually turned upside down. Newman can be anti-Semitic at the beginning of this book, but this stance alterations later on due to all the hardships he puts up with. Miller says that he thinks the key reason why people are anti-Semitic is because “they feel per, a not-belonging” (Intro X), and Newman seems to in shape this category until the end, if he sheds his cultural concerns.

The moment Newman will be introduced in the novel, he can single, coping with his mom, and does not have any real friends to speak of which leaves him very exclusively with simply his thoughts. These thoughts leave him with not do besides question his inadequacy. Newman worries about every little mistake that can be made throughout the day until this individual almost provides breakdowns. He had an episode when riding the coach and now if he gets in he says, “his face grew pinker on the memory of this moment. His blood began to pump rapidly” and this demonstrates that he is fearful of everything in every area of your life. This is understandable though as they has no someone to talk over points with. This individual could tell his mom, but she’s growing old, and he should not bother her with these types of problems. Instead, Newman is forced to deal with his inadequacies in other forms like taking out anger on additional cultural teams. Newman ultimately meets a lady that he comes to just like as higher than a friend and she allows him break through several of his anti-Semitism, but he still is not able to figure it clear. When Newman first complies with Gertrude Übertrieben kritisch, she is buying a job for his first place of work. Newman thinks that she appears Jewish as a result of way the lady dresses, so does his boss. The fellowship between Newman and Finkelstein helped Newman defeat his anti-Semitism and business lead a more satisfying life.
